Statement

日が沈み、夜になる少し前、
または、日が昇るほんの手前、弱い光の世界。
植物たちの光合成と呼吸のバランスが入れ替わるころ。
明るくもなく暗くもない光に包まれた中、植物たちはゆっくりと、たしかに動き出す。
新芽や蔓は伸び、蕾は開き、または花閉じる…。
その活動は光補償点と関係があるだろう。
微かな明るさの中、植物は立体的な陰影や存在感よりも、微妙な色の階調差や、花弁や葉の薄さが際立ち、ひっそりとあやしく輝いている。

私たちのとなりに存在する、静かな、得体の知れない、したたかな生命に魅了されている。
植物がいなければ、私たちは存在することができない。
植物たちを通し世界を見つめて描いて来た中で、この世界の景色を決めているのは、植物の呼吸だ、と考えるようになった。

植物の光合成と呼吸がつくり出した空気、光補償点の薄明、植物たちの妙なることを、不自由ながら興味の尽きない日本画材で描いていきたいと強く思った。

Around the time
When dusk falls just after sunset
Or when a band of faint light appears just before sunrise,
Plants have a balance between their photosynthesis and respiration.
Their activities should be related to the light compensation point.
In such a light condition of neither brightness nor darkness,
They start slowly yet steadily
Sprouting, growing, budding, flowering or closing,
While enigmatically shining with their thinness of leaves, fragility of petals and subtlety of shades rather than their presence of solidity.

Plants, our neighbors which live their life calmly yet toughly, have always fascinated me.
Without them, we cannot survive.
In the course of working on landscapes seen through “plants’ eyes”, I have come to feel sure that it is the breath of plants that determines the color of this world.

As one of my lifelong themes, I shall continue to work on plants through the use of unique and profound materials for Japanese painting (Nihonga), particularly focusing on an atmosphere created by their photosynthesis and respiration, dimness closely related to the light compensation point, and the wonder of plants.

The light compensation point is the level of light intensity where plants’ photosynthesis rate matches their respiration rate.

植物細胞は魅惑的なモチーフ。

様々な魅力的な形は、顕微鏡をもってしか見えないことに惹かれている。

顕微写真は、細胞を鮮やかな色素で着色して撮影される。
その印象的な写真資料を、あえて微かなはっきり見えないものとして再構成し私は描く。

細胞を不確かであやふやな存在として、絵にのみ可能な方法で立ち上がらせたいのです。
金属箔や薄い和紙などの素材を使い、強さを与えるように裏打ちしながら、層を重ねるように描いたこれらの作品は、微妙な絵肌を持ち、光の具合や角度によって見え方を変えていく。

Plant cells are a fascinating subject for me.
Their variety of forms, which become visible only through a lens of microscope, are really intriguing.
They are usually stained with dyes when micrographed and those images are impressive enough, yet I’d prefer to recompose them to represent as subtle beings that are unapparent, uncertain or unsure, in a way unique to paintings.
Drawn superimposing some colors and putting small pieces of metal leaf on every single thin sheet of Japanese paper lined for strength enhancement, this series realizes its own delicate textured surface, whose appearance varies with changes in light environment.
